This sermon tells the story of Mephibosheth, the disabled grandson of King Saul and son of Jonathan, who represents how God shows mercy to the undeserving. At age five, Mephibosheth was dropped by his nurse while fleeing after his father and grandfather’s deaths, leaving him permanently disabled. Despite his circumstances, King David later showed him extraordinary kindness for Jonathan’s sake, giving him land and a place at the royal table. The story illustrates how bad things happen to good people through no fault of their own, but God can turn these circumstances around through His mercy and grace.
The sermon emphasizes that like Mephibosheth, we are all spiritually disabled and unworthy, yet through Christ’s sacrifice at Calvary, we are invited to sit at God’s table as His children. The story also warns against developing self-pity from life’s hardships and shows the importance of maintaining gratitude even during adversity, as Mephibosheth demonstrated when he remained thankful to King David despite being deceived by Ziba.
Intro Prayer
Heavenly Father, we come before You today with open hearts and minds, ready to receive what You want to teach us through Your Word. Just as You showed mercy to Mephibosheth, we acknowledge that we too are unworthy of Your grace, yet You have invited us to sit at Your table. Help us to set aside our preconceptions and past hurts, and give us ears to hear what You want to speak to us today. Open our hearts to understand Your love and mercy in new ways. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
